Our Furry Neighbors at Alaqua Animal Refuge Are Always in Need of a Helping Hand

Hammock Bay is located in Freeport, FL and happens to be only five minutes from Alaqua Animal Refuge. Alaqua is a no kill animal shelter with a full staff on 10 acres of farm land. Alaqua provides a home to as many as 250 animals at any given time. They average about 100 adoptions a month and have found homes for over 11,000 animals since 2007. Alaqua Animal Refuge has proven to succeed time and time again, but they are always in need of a helping hand. Trustworthy, reliable volunteers are always welcomed and residents of Hammock Bay are so close, it’s the perfect place to give back to your community.

We all need to get out and get some fresh air, right? Well, one of the most needed volunteer positions is the dog walker. Every day at 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., volunteers come and walk all the dogs. This takes about one or two hours, depending on how many volunteers show up. It’s great exercise, but also gives the dogs some much needed bonding time and better prepares them for life with a new family. The dogs also get play yard time daily and there must be someone in the play yard to supervise, so that is another great volunteer opportunity.

Let’s not forget the cats! Volunteers are needed to play with the cats and clean the cat houses. This is ideal for someone who loves cats, but maybe can’t have as many as they want. You might even get some hilarious cat videos out of it too. There are also opportunities for horse enthusiasts based on experience.

Above are the fun outdoor positions, but Alaqua also needs help inside too. Volunteers help in the office with greeting people, giving tours, helping with laundry, event planning and even grant writing. So if you are unable to assist outside, maybe one of these jobs is for you.

No matter how you decide to give back or help, your donation of time or money is always appreciated. Standing up for animals is so important. They don’t have a voice so we have to be theirs.
