About Walton Springs Farm:

Joel R. McCrory and Muriel McCrory purchased the land for Walton Springs Farm in Defuniak Springs in 1998 as a getaway from the city and to get back to their cherished, simple roots. After a year of hard work and cleaning up the overgrown 50-acre farm, the McCrory’s started farming the land. They cultivated the ground and grew vegetables, adding new varieties every year. They also pitched in sunflowers, seeds, bulbs and dazzling new varieties that were not available locally.

Mr. McCrory lovingly grew sunflowers for his wife as they were her favorite. Walton Springs Farm became well-known by the locals for the stunning fields of sunflowers grown along US Highway 331 that bordered the farm. Locals and tourists alike would often stop to admire and take photos among the sunflowers. Mr. McCrory was also well-known as ‘The Sweet Potato Man.’ Each week he set up his roadside produce stand on State Highway83 across from the fairgrounds with delicious sweet potatoes, produce and flowers.

After many years and many memories farming the land at Walton Springs Farm, the McCrory’s sons and grandson now manage the farm, the roadside stand, and the community farmers market event.
